Top Winter Photography Locations in Denver

Location ideas during the winter months

During the winter months, when the trees have no leaves and the grass is no longer green, it's hard to imagine an outdoor photo session. But that's what this list is for! To show you that it can be done and it will look beautiful.

In winter we want to go to places with mountains, evergreens, rock formations, or buildings. This way we avoid the dull grass and the bare trees. We hope you enjoy this list!

Looking for more locations? Feel free to check out our locations map page for a view of all the locations that we use in the Denver metro area!

Some locations require a permit and advance notice. Find out more about photography permits in the Denver metro area.

1. Union Station

At Union Station you have the inside of the beautifully renovated station but you also have areas around the station that makes this location a great spot year round! This is easily our favorite spot because if it's a little cold outside then we can take photos inside while we warm up.

2. City Park, behind the Denver Museum of Nature & Science:

This area of City Park is perfect because there are some beautiful trees and tall grass next to the museum. You also have a great view of the city and lake at sunset! You have to enter off Montview and Colorado in order to capture this view.

4. Washington Park

Our favorite spot at Wash Park during the winter months is on the northeast corner of the park, off Franklin and Virginia. Around sunset you have a beautiful view with the lake and boat house in the background.

5. Mt. Falcon, west parking lot

This made our list because of the great views we are able to capture along the trails. Also, there are plenty of trees if you want more of a forest look. The photos here look great anytime, but sunset is our favorite time!

6. Cheesman Park

Cheesman Park works great because of the pavilion in the middle of the park. It's a beautiful structure and it looks amazing at sunset but photos here will look great anytime.

7. South Valley Park

Just south of Red Rocks is the little known South Valley Park. They are not as famous as Red Rocks but just as beautiful! The best light here is first thing in the morning (can get very cold during the winter months) or at sunset. We definitely prefer sunset and you will too.

Honorable Mentions

Red Rocks

Red Rocks is absolutely beautiful and looks incredible around sunset (especially with snow on the ground!). But we need a weeks notice to ask for a permit to shoot there.

Lookout Mountain Park in Golden

Once upon a time this was our go to spot for forest and mountains within the Denver metro area. But over the past year JeffCo has placed barricades all along the beautiful lookout points and we are no longer able to access them. It's still beautiful and we could still have some nice views but it's no longer the same.
